International Dyslexia Association

The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) is an international organization that provides tools and resources to deal with the complex issues of dyslexia.  Their free resources for teachers include:

  • A handbook to help identify students with potential reading disabilities.
  • A handbook of Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading.

Their resources for families include:

  • An IDA Dyslexia Handbook, describing what families should know about assessments, effective teaching approaches and self-advocacy ideas.
  • Fact Sheets of professionally reviewed material to support advocacy efforts.

Other resources on the site include a self-assessment tool, a services provider directory, FAQ, infographics, and more.

LD Online

LD OnLine provides parents and teachers with current, accurate and authoritative information about a variety of learning disabilities and related issues. The goal is to get students they help they need, with early interventions.

For educators, there are resources for teaching strategies, accommodations, classroom management, IEPs and more. For parents, there are resources for diagnosis, IDEA and student entitlements, homework help, homeschooling, Q&A, support resources, and much more.

Helping Struggling Readers

Reading Rockets provides resources to parents and teachers supporting struggling readers. The resources include videos, research briefs, articles and webcasts. The focus is on early identification of a reading problems and dyslexia and strategies and techniques for helping the child in the classroom and at home.

For instance, research shows one-on-one tutoring is very effective in helping struggling readers achieve phonemic awareness.  Reading Rockets has a video clearly illustrates the techniques used in the classroom, as a teacher and student work through a lesson.  The resources on this site are outstanding.

Dyscalculia: Math Learning Disability

Dyscalculia is a term meaning “specific learning disability in mathematics.” This site provides background and research on this learning disability. It provides a preliminary diagnosis checklist, and helpful information on the laws and student rights surrounding formal diagnosis and treatment. There are many other resources on identifying this learning challenge and in adapting instruction for the student.

Child Development Institute

The site seeks to become the “go to” site for parents of ADD/ADHD children for information, products and services related to child development, psychology, health, parenting, learning, and more. The goals are to foster positive parent-child relationships, and to foster the parent as the child’s first most important teacher
