Learn.Genetics

From site:  The Genetic Science Learning Center is an outreach education program located in the midst of bioscience research at the University of Utah. Our mission is to help people understand how genetics affects their lives and society.

To achieve this mission, we present education offerings for various audiences, including:

  • This website, which delivers interactive and print-based resources, free of charge, to Internet users worldwide. The website has two main components:

    • Information and activities: These address standards for science education, and are accessible to all users from the homepage.
    • Teacher Resources and Lesson Plans: These are accessible from the top right of any page. They include PDF-based Print-and-Go™ classroom activities and teacher guides for all materials.
  • Professional development programs that update K-12 teachers’ expertise in bioscience topics. See our list of upcoming courses and workshops, accessible through the Teacher Resources and Lesson Plans section of this site.

PBS Evolution

From site:

Evolution determines who lives, who dies, and who passes traits on to the next generation. The process plays a critical role in our daily lives, yet it is one of the most overlooked — and misunderstood — concepts ever described…

The site has four major components:

  • 7 main topic areas that align closely with the seven programs in the video series
  • A searchable multimedia library with assets organized along lines that correspond with curriculum topics often taught in high school biology. This collection includes assets from other sources as well as from this site.
  • Professional development resources to help science educators develop effective, yet sensitive ways to teach these topics amid the intense debate about the validity of evolutionary theory.
  • Seven short videos designed expressly to stimulate informed discussion in the classroom.

Angry Red Planet

From site:  When you volunteered to help oversee the simulated spaceflight to Mars, everyone warned you the job would be boring. Of course that was before the oxygen started getting low…

Disaster threatens a simulated mission to Mars unless you can figure out what’s going wrong.

UCMP K-12 Resources

From site:  For teachers – A guide to UCMP resources for teachers, including online materials and ways to participate in events at UCMP.  For students – Interactive educational exhibits, paleontology information and more.

Featured resources:

  • Understanding Evolution – This rich website helps you understand what evolution is, how it works, how it factors into your life, how research in evolutionary biology is performed, and how ideas in this area have changed over time.
  • The Paleontology Portal – includes explorations of famous fossil assemblages, a searchable set of fossil images, and a tool allowing you to map the ages of rocks in your own state and view corresponding fossils.
    • Biology4Kids!

From site:  If you are looking for basic biology information, stay on this site. It’s not just biology for kids, it’s for everyone. We have information on cell structure, cell function, scientific studies, plants, vertebrates, invertebrates, and other life science topics…

So you’re asking, what is BIOLOGY? Well… Here’s our best definition. Biology is the study of LIFE and the changes that take place with and around all living things. And don’t just think we mean Earth. The study of biology covers every planet and object in the Universe.

In the same way everything on Earth is made up of atoms, everything that is alive on Earth is made up of cells. An entire living thing can be one cell or it can be billions. Most cells on Earth have similar pieces and parts. Let’s get started and look inside cell structure. Go take a look!
