From site:  This report illustrates, by means of a computer animation, how an earthquake occurs and what types of damage may result. The report is intended to help students and others visualize what causes earthquake shaking and some of the possible results of the shaking. By studying the animation and the paper model, students will come to understand that earthquakes result from faulting in the Earth and that the potential consequences of earthquakes are numerous and serious.

Included in this report are a template for making a paper model, instructions for assembly, educators' guide, and animations describing possible effects of an earthquake, including the collapse of structures, fire, and a tsunami.

From site:  If you're looking for ideas for a science fair project or demonstration, these pages may help you find a topic that would be fun to explore. They also provide ideas for teachers who are looking for classroom demonstrations or hands-on, inquiry-based student exercises to expand their curriculum.

I am an Emeritus US Geological Survey Geophysicist specializing in seismology and earthquake location programming...

Projects and lesson plans described in the Earth Science section include a tabletop earthquake demonstration, an earthshaking lab, a shake table, and a paper model that illustrates sea floor spreading, subduction, faulting, and the source of volcanic arcs.

In addition to Earth Science projects, the Earthquakes section has links to some USGS sites that will help in keeping track of current earthquake activity. If you want to make your own seismic recorder (called a seismometer), check out the Public Seismic Net section where you can read about my design and find links to other Public Seismic Network (PSN) web sites.

From site:  This website is an educational resource that describes the science behind volcanoes and volcanic processes. The site is sponsored by NASA under the auspices of Project ALERT (Augmented Learning Environment and Renewable Teaching). It is intended for the education of university students of geology and volcanology and teachers of earth science. Each section in the menu builds upon previous sections. For users who lack fundamental knowledge of volcanological principles and terms, it is best to proceed through the website in a progressive manner. More advanced users will find each section self-contained and can navigate through the website as their interest dictates.

From site:

Earthquakes, a scientific and physical phenomenon, affect our lives in many ways. In this project, students use Real-Time earthquake and volcano data from the Internet to explore the relationship between earthquakes, plate tectonics, and volcanoes.

Students will:

  • Use Real-Time data to solve a problem.
  • Study the correlation between earthquakes and tectonic plates.
  • Determine whether or not there is a relationship between volcanoes and plate boundaries.
