From site: Welcome to the world of Aunty Math! Periodically, Aunt Mathilda Mathews or "Aunty Math" (also known as Angela Giglio Andrews) will present a new math challenge to the internet audience via the DuPage Children's Museum site on the World Wide Web. Each challenge is presented in the form of a story taken from the life of Aunty Math, her two nephews Barney and Danny, and her niece Gina. Aunty Math challenges present an opportunity for students in grades K-5 to use their math and thinking skills to solve various problems. These challenges can be found on the Challenge of the Week page.

From site: This activity begins with the reading aloud of several math-oriented stories, identifies key mathematical vocabulary terms, models math story writing, and then gives students an opportunity to write addition and subtraction stories. Students first draw a series of pictures which depict adding more or taking away objects; they then write a correlating story to go with the pictures they’ve drawn. Finally, students share their stories aloud, and equations are written which symbolize the adding and subtracting written into the stories.

From site: The Fermi Questions Library features classic Fermi questions with annotated solutions, a list of Fermi questions for use with students, Fermi questions with a Louisiana twist, and Fermi activities for the K-12 classroom. Fermi questions receive their name from Enrico Fermi, an Italian physicist known for his participation in the Los Alamos atomic bomb project and the development of quantum theory. Fermi questions emphasize estimation, numerical reasoning, communicating in mathematics, and questioning skills. Students often believe that "word problems" have one exact answer and that the answer is derived in a unique manner. Fermi questions encourage multiple approaches, emphasize process rather than "the answer", and promote nontraditional problem solving strategies.

From site: This series of activities explores the mathematical and environmental aspects of population growth. How fast is the population growing? Has it always grown at this rate? Are the populations of different countries growing differently? How can we predict the population in the future? How will a growing population impact the environment?
Using archived census and demographic data as well as up-to-the-minute population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, students will learn how to model population growth and study the implications of a changing population.

From site: Combine understanding with skill! Problems "with a Point" help students in grades 6-12 learn new mathematical ideas by building on old ones. Each problem or sequence focuses on one mathematical idea and also connects that idea with others. Varying in difficulty and approaches, these problems are useful for teachers, students, parents, math clubs, and home-schoolers. Problems are classified by topic, time required, suggested technology, required mathematical background, and habits of mind that students develop or use as they work. Synopses of the problems are keyword searchable. Answers and solutions are provided, and many problems include hints.
