This site provides typical spelling lists for grades 1-8, as well as a review of the alphabet. A very useful tool is that it enables a teacher or student to input a spelling list, and then use a variety of methods to practice spelling, such as adding or removing letters, and unscrambling letters.

Free Rice combines two goals:
For every vocabulary word you answer correctly, Free Rice will donate 20 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program. This effort is funded by the advertisers on the site. Under Options, you can keep track of your vocabulary level and how much rice you've donated. The difficulty of the vocabulary words is based on how many mistakes you make -- and no, rice is not taken away if you make a mistake. So the vocabulary is tailored to to learner's appropriate level, from beginning readers to adults. Free Rice has links to other actions you can take to learn more about and to end world poverty and hunger. FreeRice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com.

From the site: Spelling Bee is an interactive Web site where students can learn grade-appropriate vocabulary by practicing how to spell specific words and using contextual clues to understand their meanings. The activities at each grade level are designed to let students work at a pace that is appropriate to their skill level. Students hear words multiple times that they are asked to spell, typing and retyping words until they are prepared to submit their words for scoring. Students also are able to take advantage of the multimedia aspects of the interactive, imagining words as they appear in print, hearing words as they are spoken, and reading definitions that help them connect spelling to meaning. (Note: Grade 1 does not present definitions as hints because it focuses on sight words and expects that most students will probably be using the interactive with a teacher, parent, or caregiver.)

Play along with them if you can, or talk to them about the games later so they have a chance to practice the new words they've learned.
